Birding at Malibu Lagoon with Dan Cooper

What a great morning we had birding with ecologist Dan Cooper! He suggested Malibu Lagoon State Park–and I was embarrassed to realize that despite being a native of the area, I had never once visited the state park. We learned so much –and saw so much!– in just a few hours. It was great being out there…

Malibu Lagoon is an estuary at the mouth of Malibu Creek at the Pacific Ocean in Malibu. Migratory birds use the lagoon when on the Pacific Flyway.Snowy Plovers nest on the beach and are protected.

IMG_1746In addition to the Gadwall and Mandarins, we saw my beloved barn sparrows, snow plovers, grackles, Yellow Warblers–and a wonderful Red-Necked Phalarope. We even saw a bunny! A great day!
